Updated: Aug 6, 2023

What does a Counsellor do?

A counsellor is a trained professional who provides support and guidance to individuals, couples, families, or groups facing emotional or psychological challenges. They create a safe and confidential space where clients can explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. Counsellors employ various techniques and styles based on their training and the needs of their clients. Different types of counselling styles include:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

Focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional well-being.

Psychodynamic Therapy:

Explores unconscious patterns and unresolved conflicts from the past to gain insight into current issues.

Humanistic Therapy:

Emphasizes self-exploration, personal growth, and self-actualization. Person-Centred Therapy, a humanistic approach, emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT):

Concentrates on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems, emphasizing goal setting and focusing on strengths.

Gestalt Therapy:

Focuses on promoting self-awareness and personal responsibility by exploring one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in the present moment.

Family Systems Therapy:

Examines family dynamics and relationships to address issues and improve communication and functioning within the family unit.

Existential Therapy:

Explores questions of meaning, purpose, and existence to help individuals find their own sense of meaning in life.

Counsellors may integrate multiple approaches, adapting their style to best meet the needs of their clients. It is important for clients to find a counsellor whose approach aligns with their preferences and goals.
